New York women are shopping with a purpose
New York City came alive the night of April 24th, as sixty socially-conscious consumers came together to make a difference in the lives of women around the world. The New York City chapter of Women of Vision held its first ever fundraiser to great success. Over $5,000 were raised for the Bolivian Women’s Gender Equality Project. Another exciting aspect of the event was the Global Marketplace. Guests were encouraged to buy Mother’s Day gifts from among six vendors who sold items directly benefiting women in the developing world.
The evening began with a cocktail party and great food. Jazz musicians played lively music to fill the room. As people stepped off the elevator on the 38th floor of a residential building on the East River, they were greeted with a spectacular view of New York City. As drinks were poured and scrumptious food consumed, guests browsed the variety of attractive handbags, scarves, jewelry, and household items for sale. Each vendor was carefully selected as organizations with social programs that directly benefit the empowerment of women worldwide. A portion of the event’s sales was donated directly to World Vision.
The highlight of the evening came during the “stock her shelves” campaign of the “Strong Woman Strong Thread Boutique.” A small mock up of a Bolivian woman’s store became the focal point of the night. Guests could select an item from the “inventory” table and with a nominal donation, an item was then relocated to the Boutique table. The goal was to stock the boutique with as many items as possible. Some items included knitting needles, embroidery thread, sewing machines, and a Bolivian blanket. Items ranged in price from $25 – $1000. With regular updates to the progress of the donations, the goal of $5,000 was surpassed by the end of the night.
Overall, the evening was a great success! Many new people heard about the work of World Vision and Women of Vision. The vendors promoted their products and programs to a greater audience. And the women of New York City enjoyed an evening of food, fellowship, and fun!
