We’re Sharing Big Dreams This Christmas!

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: More children die every day from diseases caused by unsafe water than from AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. Worldwide, about one in nine people get water from contaminated sources, and more than one in three lack access to basic sanitation. Each year, the lives of an estimated 2.2 million children could be saved through safe water, sanitation, and hygiene programs.

For women and girls — many of whom spend several hours each day walking to get water — education and economic opportunities are a distant second to survival. That makes it nearly impossible for them to break the cycle of poverty.

World Vision is working to transform the lives of 7.5 million people by providing access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. World Vision is currently one of the largest providers of clean water in the developing world, reaching one new person with clean water every 30 seconds.

By providing communities with improved access to clean water, we’re not only dramatically increasing health and lowering child mortality, but also freeing women and girls to invest in life-giving activities like education and income-generating efforts.

Women of Vision has selected to support World Vision’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects in Mali and Niger this year. Here we have gathered some of our favorite options from World Vision’s Gift Catalog that address Water, Sanitation and Hygiene needs. If you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas, consider one of these options:

Clean water
It’s a basic resource that can be easy to take for granted — but for millions around the world, it’s a necessity that’s tragically out of reach. Access to clean water can determine whether or not children are able to get an education, or whether a community can lift itself out of poverty. Children who have to spend long, hard hours fetching water from a distant, unclean source don’t have time to go to class — and waterborne illness often keeps them out of school, anyway. Meanwhile, adults can’t participate in economic development if they don’t have access to a resource as basic as clean water.

Your gift to our Clean Water Fund will help us bring greater access to clean, safe water in communities around the world through interventions like deep wells, piping systems, water storage containers, purification equipment, and more.

Deep Well
A deep well fitted with a hand pump can provide up to 2,800 gallons of safe water a day to benefit as many as 300 people! In many communities, clean water lies hundreds of feet below layers of hard rock. Children have no choice but to walk long distances to find water that is often dirty and disease-ridden. When our drilling teams strike water, entire villages erupt in celebration — because a clean water source can cut a community’s child mortality rate by as much as half. Donate a share of a deep well.

The World Vision Gift Catalog offers hundreds of ways to reflect the spirit of the Christmas season. With items across various prices and categories that help lift children, families, and even entire communities out of poverty, you can bring meaningful assistance to those in need — and let loved ones know that you did so in their honor by emailing or printing out a card to present on Christmas Day. Browse the catalog for yourself and find an item by which you can show loved ones how much you appreciate them.
