We’re Sharing Big Dreams This Christmas!

Child Protection and Education: Worldwide, 85 million children are compelled into exploitative, dangerous forms of labor, including the sex trade and jobs that place them in hazardous circumstances. Many are forced by poverty to work to earn money to support their families. Others are kidnapped or lured from home by the promise of a good job. Each year, criminals make an estimated $32 billion by exploiting victims of human trafficking.

Many more children face the threat of other forms of abuse and violence, including sexual assault, domestic abuse, gang violence, female genital mutilation, and forced early marriage. Studies indicate that nearly one in four people report having been physically abused as children. In the developing world, more than one in three girls marry before age 18, with an increased risk of experiencing domestic violence.

World Vision is working to prevent child exploitation and abuse and to protect and restore affected children through programs reaching more than 2.6 million people around the world. Our innovative efforts to help children who have suffered from, or are at risk of, exploitation and abuse include programs that provide individual care based on a personalized assessment of the child’s needs. Through education and support groups, we’re also working with families and communities to raise awareness of child exploitation so risks can be identified and averted before children are harmed. Along with strategic partners, we’re advocating for legislative change and collaborating with local leaders to implement changes, hold governments accountable, and create safer environments for children.

Women of Vision has selected to support World Vision’s Child Protection projects in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Kenya this year. Here we have gathered some of our favorite options from World Vision’s Gift Catalog that address Child Protection needs. If you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas, consider one of these options:

Hope for sexually exploited girls
Tragically, millions of children — most of them girls — are enslaved in the global sex trade today. Their lives are a cycle of vicious abuse and exploitation. Many of them are forced to serve multiple “clients” each day, under threats of violence if they don’t obey. They’ve seen horrors that no child should ever have to face. Your gift today will help us bring relief and hope to girls who have been exposed to unimaginable evil and suffering — providing interventions like safe shelter, compassionate counseling, vocational training, nutritious food, medical care, and, when possible, reintegration with a loving family.

Help Stop Human Trafficking
Right now, there are more than 20 million slaves around the world, more than any other time in history. The U.S. State Department estimates that 50 percent of all human trafficking victims are children. Your gift today can help stop human trafficking. World Vision has extensive programs to protect children and combat human trafficking and slavery. We work to ensure safe places for trafficked and vulnerable children; provide counseling and vocational training to help children recover from their experiences; reunite trafficked children with their families when possible; and support the appropriate authorities to identify, investigate, and prosecute traffickers.

Education for girls
Help a girl go to school, receive an education, and overcome poverty. Studies show that when a woman is educated, both she and her children lead better, healthier lives. Poverty, discrimination, and exploitation keep millions of girls out of school. What’s more, half of all girls in developing countries don’t even finish primary school. Some girls must work to help their families, or stay home to care for younger siblings. Other girls simply don’t have the money for educational fees or school uniforms. Your gift today can help transform the life of a girl in poverty and give her hope for the future. Education gives girls the potential to earn better wages, raise healthier and more educated children, and have a voice in her community.

The World Vision Gift Catalog offers hundreds of ways to reflect the spirit of the Christmas season. With items across various prices and categories that help lift children, families, and even entire communities out of poverty, you can bring meaningful assistance to those in need — and let loved ones know that you did so in their honor by emailing or printing out a card to present on Christmas Day. Browse the catalog for yourself and find an item by which you can show loved ones how much you appreciate them.
